Ready to Work Program

Through funding made available by and Immigration, Refugees and  Citizenship Canada, in partnership with the Unemployed Help Centre of Windsor (UHC) and OTEC, the UHC is offering a unique and innovative program called “Ready to Work”.  This 10-week program is designed to assist newcomers with a CLB level 4-10 by providng them with the essential knowledge, attitudes, and skills for a career in Canada’s Tourism and Hospitality sector.  This sector includes attractions, accommodations, food services, transportation, recreation, events & conferences, tourism services and much more. In addition, participants will learn English vocabulary and awareness of the Canadian work culture and environment.


  • Must be a permanent resident of Canada, Convention Refugee, or legally allowed to remain in Canada
  • Must be 18 years of age or older
  • Unemployed or underemployed and seeking work
  • Able to commit to the full duration of the program

Course Content

  • English Language Instruction - specific to the tourism and hospitality industry.

  • Hands-on Culinary Training - provided in our Community Kitchen with the support of two Red Seal Chefs.

  • Obtain Five Certifications:

    • National emerit Canadian Workplace Essentials

    • Service Excellence

    • National Food Safety

    • Smart Serve

    • WHIMS

  • Finding and Applying Skills in Tourism - provides skills and aptitude assessment

  • Computer Skills - MS Office skills (Word and Outlook) and Internet Browsing

  • Cash Handling - covers retail math, common currencies, refunds, discounts, credit and debit card transaction and more!

  • National emerit Tourism Certified Professional (TCP) – registration and workplace follow-up/support  - National credentialing preparation in any of 16 National tourism and hospitality occupational streams



On-site Care for Newcomer Children (ages 19 months - 6 years)
We are on a bus route (Ottawa 4 to the front door - every 20 minutes)
We are wheelchair Accessible (all programs on one floor)
