First Nation Metis Inuit (FNMI) Student Support Worker

Description:
Work closely with the Superintendent responsible for Indigenous Education and staff to support improved Indigenous student achievement and well-being; Liaise with FNMI community members, parents/guardians, organizations, and educators to partner, build, and maintain positive relationships that result in improved confidence and student achievement for FNMI students; Meet with educators and support staff to develop and monitor individual student profiles; Provide direct, in-classroom support to self-identified FNMI students to enhance organizational skills, foster student learning, and facilitate smooth transitions; Work with individual and small groups of self-identified FNMI students to foster a strong sense of identity and belonging; Demonstrate a commitment to and documented success in working to create a fair, inclusive, and antiracist environment for all stakeholders, and to supporting diverse constituencies and populations.Qualifications:
- An understanding of diverse Indigenous cultures, learnings, and practices to enhance supportive strategies and promote the well-being and success of Indigenous learners. Good interpersonal skills, ability to communicate effectively across cultures in different social settings and superior conflict resolution skills. An understanding of current and emerging issues of importance in Indigenous people and communities. Excellent organizational skills and collaboration skills. A good understanding of health issues affecting youth and adults, such as FASD, drug and alcohol additions, intergenerational trauma, mental health and suicide. A good understanding of cultural differences and how they impact treatment approaches for children and youth. A high degree of enthusiasm, motivation and commitment in order to achieve the program’s goals and objectives. Experience working with clients with Indigenous background is required. Knowledge of an Indigenous Language would be an asset. A degree in Indigenous Studies or a related discipline from an accredited university or college would be considered an asset but is not required. Must be willing to work flexible hours that meet the needs of the children/families including evenings and weekends if needed.
